This is a 22-day program beginning on 18 December 1999. The program begins with the participants attending His Holiness the Dalai Lama's teaching at Bodh Gaya. After the teaching we visit the famous Ajanta and Ellora Caves. The caves of Ellora are located about 30 kms away from the city of Aurangabad. The Ellora Caves are famous for their exquisite sculptures while the Ajanta Caves are known for their aesthetic paintings. In terms of historical chronology, the Ellora caves begin where the Ajanta Caves end. It is believed that the builders of Ajanta moved to Ellora when for reasons as yet unknown they suddenly ceased construction activities at their earlier site. While the Ajanta Caves are all Buddhist, the Ellora Caves are not totally so--only those of the earliest period are Buddhist. With the decline of Buddhism in India, a series of Hindu and Jain cave temples were added later on. We spend the last three days of the program relaxing at a beautiful beach of India.
